Recommended Tips

  1. Lowering your thermostat You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F (20°C) when you're at home and awake, and lowering it when you're asleep or away. This strategy is effective and inexpensive if you are willing to adjust the thermostat by hand and wake up in a chilly house. In the summer, you can follow the same strategy with central air conditioning, too, by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lowering the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling.
  2. Have regular seasonal maintenance performed on your system The best way to make sure you are getting every drop of efficiency out of your system is to make sure you are maintaining it correctly. Replacing your filters regularly is only part of this, though. To prolong the life of your system and pre-empt potentially costly repairs, have a qualified technician from Air Worth come out once in the Spring and once in the Fall to make sure your systems are running at their best. Check out our Preventative Maintenance Agreement for more information on seasonal tune-ups and what Air Worth has to offer!
  3. Make sure the heat & air you pay for stay in your home Most energy inefficiency problems are caused by loose windows and poorly sealed building structures, leading to heat infiltration and loss. Poor insulation, attic ventilation, and inefficient A/C and heating equipment can quickly increase your daily energy consumption, causing you to pay for energy that you don’t even use.
Attic insulation, attic ventilation, home sealing and high efficiency air conditioning equipment can drastically reduce your energy consumption. These products often pay for themselves within a few years, and sometimes even within a matter of months!
  4. Use the ceiling fan in winter Hot air rises. So in winter, much of the heat your furnace in winter is pushing out may be remaining in the uppermost areas of your rooms and your house. A ceiling fan, set to rotate clockwise, will push trapped heat down into your room. Because pushing the heat down to where you are will help you feel warmer, you won’t have to turn your heat up as high - which will help keep your heating costs down!
  5. How to change the direction your ceiling fan moves Ceiling fans are useful in moving both warm and cool air around in a room, helping your HVAC system to work more efficiently - and saving you money on your cooling & heating costs.

In the winter, the blades on your fan should be moving clockwise. In the summer, the blades on your fan should be moving counter clockwise.

If you aren’t sure how change the direction of the blades, don’t worry - it doesn’t require any tools. Simply find the switch on the fan housing. It should be a simple up or down switch. It will likely be unlabeled as to which is which, so you’ll need to determine what mode the fan is currently in. Stand underneath the fan to determine this. If the fan is already turning in the right direction, you don’t need to flip the switch. If it is spinning in the opposite direction, flip the switch. Make sure to label the switch to save time in the future, and remember to switch it back when the season changes!
